The New Orleans Pelicans have been struggling mightily since Zion Williamson’s injury in January. Unfortunately, the latest update doesn’t bode well for them moving forward.
Speaking to the media this weekend, Pelicans head coach David Griffin announced that Zion has re-aggravated his hamstring injury. Per Andrew Lopez, he is now looking at a multi-week layoff. Griffin said that Zion’s injury will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break.
Zion has not played since putting up 26 points against the Grizzlies on January 2. The Pelicans have gone 6-14 since then, falling from 23-14 to 29-28.
As a result, the Pelicans now sit seventh in the West but have almost no cushion at all as the conference race remains tight with 25 games to go. Zion’s absence could see them fall out of the playoff standings altogether if he isn’t back by mid-March.
Prior to his injury, Zion Williamson was having yet another superb, All-Star season. In 29 starts he’s averaged 26 points, 7.0 rebounds and a career-high 4.6 assists per game.
The Pelicans are 17-12 with him and 12-16 without him.
Suffice it to say, the Pelicans are not much of a playoff contender without him leading the team. Their best hope is to try and tread water and stay at around .500 while they wait for him to return.
Can the Pelicans stay alive in the playoff race long enough for Zion to return?
