Tottenham will field inexperienced midfield duo Pape Matar Sarr and Oliver Skipp when they resume their Champions League campaign in Milan tonight, after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for the rest of the season.
Bentancur, has added to Spurs’ injury woes after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Leicester. With Yves Bissouma already out with an ankle injury and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg serving a one-match suspension, boss Antonio Conte will pair Sarr and Skipp together rather than push Eric Dier forward from centre half.
‘We have the solution in our house with the two young players,’ said Conte. ‘They are [in their] first game in the Champions League. They are really young, 20 and 22 years old, but we have to be good to help them overcome the emotion. We must trust them.’
Tottenham revealed the extent of Uruguay international Bentancur’s injury in a statement yesterday. ‘The midfielder will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff,’ it read.
Spurs are already without goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, ruled out for at least six weeks with a knee injury, while even Conte has only just returned from having gallbladder surgery in Italy.
He said: ‘I’m still not 100% but it’s important to be with the players.’
