Joe Root has told his team they will need to be brave and committed to doing things differently despite being handed some harsh lessons at the Gabba.

Root had to face up to a 10th defeat out of 11 matches in Australia, but refused to let the familiar feeling get him down and put his side into a spiral of negativity after just one game.

England might not have come from behind to win a series Down Under since 1954/55, but that is exactly what they need to do this time round and Root believes he has the personnel to do just that.

“It is important in a five-match series not to feel too sorry for ourselves,” he said. “We need to relish the challenge to go out there and try and get one back.

“There is some frustration with this one, because we worked really hard to get ourselves back in the game and we knew how important it was to try and get through to the new ball unscathed.

“If we’d done that we could have given ourselves an opportunity, so there are harsh lessons that we’ve learned throughout this Test, so we need to learn from this and come back stronger.

“We are a team who responds well to situations like this. We are not scared of a challenge or a difficult result.

“I’ve said if we go about things exactly how we did on the last two tours we’re going to get the same results.

“So we have to be brave, we have to look to do things differently to previous tours and we have to be confident that we can take the game to the Aussies and get the result we want in Adelaide.”

Root is still searching for his first hundred in Australia after falling eleven runs short in Brisbane, but his form this year remains strong and he is still leading from the front.

There is no doubt that his fellow batsmen need to follow his example, and he hopes that the partnership he put on with Dawid Malan can serve as an inspiration in Adelaide next week.

“This series is not about me getting a hundred in Australia, it is about winning Test matches,” he added.

“Sometimes guys can see a couple of players doing well and they can take confidence from that knowing we can compete and we can put Australia under pressure.

“I’ve been very clear in how I want to go about my batting this year and it is great that has continued, but we all need to seek to improve and be better for longer to get those big scores.”
