MANILA, Philippines–PBA great Danny Ildefonso is making a surprise comeback after being placed on the active roster by Converge on Thurdsday.
The 46-year-old Ildefonso was activated by the FiberXers on the eve of their PBA Governors’ Cup game with the Meralco Bolts at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Incidentally, the two-time Most Valuable Player will face Meralco where he played his last game in Oct. 2014 before deciding to retire after 17 seasons.
Ildefonso, who has since turned to coaching and is part of Aldin Ayo’s staff at Converge, will wear the familiar No. 10 in the crucial tiff which the FiberXers hope to win to solidify their place in the top four.
It would be interesting to see Ildefonso’s role, which could likely be providing some cover for his protege—rookie center Justin Arana.
Social media posts have seen Ildefonso staying in tip top shape, but it remains to be seen if that would translate on the court if Ayo decides to give him some quality minutes on the hardcourt.
Ildefonso was best known for his years playing for San Miguel Beer, winning eight championships and was MVP in 2000 and 2001.
He’s also a five-time Best Player of the Conference and a three-time Finals MVP.
