Yellowjackets Will Go Further Than Cannibalism in Season 2, According to Series Showrunner

The upcoming season of the Showtime hit series Yellowjackets will get even darker.

Yellowjackets is about to get a lot darker with its upcoming second season, according to showrunner Jonathan Lisco. After an excellent debut and managing to sneak into the list of the best productions of 2022, with several nominations for important awards, Yellowjackets will receive its second season on Showtime this month, and things will get much more intense.

The story follows a tremendously talented team of high school soccer players who become the unfortunate survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern woods. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated team into savage clans while tracing the lives they tried to rebuild nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never truly the past and that what began in the wilderness is not over.

Yellowjackets stars Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey, and Tawny Cypress, alongside Ella Purnell (Sweetbitter), Samantha Hanratty (Shameless), Sophie Thatcher (Prospect), Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief), Steven Krueger (The Originals), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), and Warren Kole (Shades of Blue).

One year after its premiere, the new episodes are ready to shed some light on the mysteries surrounding the survivors of the tragic accident, but surely leaving us many new questions regarding the time they spent away from the rest of humanity, developing a culture of cannibalism, among other perturbing secrets.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Jonathan Lisco teases the horrific turns the show still has under its sleeves:

“If we do our job right, the eating of a person will not be the most transgressive thing that these young women do in the wilderness. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Each one of them is gonna make choices that they never dreamed possible. And, as we cut forward 25 years, we’re gonna watch those terrible actions surface in ways that I would say irrevocably changed the fate of their lives.”

Also, co-creator Ahsley Lyle talked about the ending they plan for the show:

“The original plan was about five seasons, and we feel like we’re still on track for that. Although, there’s always room for things. We don’t really see this as being more than a five-season show. I think that there are shows that can go forever, but I think that when you’re telling such a deeply serialized story and it’s about these characters’ lives, you want to reach a satisfying conclusion and not just drag things out forever. This isn’t really one of those setup shows where it can go anywhere. So far, we’ve been really on track. Season 2 is largely what we always planned, but you do make a lot of discoveries along the way and so it’s always a little bit surprising.”

Yellowjackets returns for its second season later this month, with a premiere date set for Mar. 24.
