Michael Longfellow appeared as a live-action Dilbert on SNL’s Weekend Update to address the controversy involving his creator Scott Adams.
It was no surprise to see Saturday Night Live taking aim at the Dilbert controversy, given how much attention this has been getting in mainstream media. Recently, it was reported that several publications were dropping the Dilbert comic strip due to problematic comments made by creator Scott Adams. On the “Weekend Update” segment of SNL, Michael Longfellow appears as Dilbert to question if he himself is racist after hearing about what his creator recently had to say. You can watch the SNL video below.
“Michael, I think I can speak for myself and the entire all-white staff at the Dilbert offices when I say this was a total shock,” Dilbert says. “I mean, most cartoonists are weird, but racist weird? Let’s just say I didn’t see that memo.”
Hoping to elicit a laugh, Dilbert adds, “Right? Memos? Work is boring, but I can be funny, too! That’s kind of my thing.”
The comic strip character goes on to explain how he already knew Adams was bad based on how the cartoonist treated him during the pandemic. Dilbert says he was forced to go into the office every day during that time, which is a problem for him as he’s autoimmune, stressing that this should be obvious from his physical appearance.
“Do I look like somebody who is not autoimmune?” he says. “My hair is skin. I cannot stress this enough, my hair is entirely skin, and it has been the great tragedy of my life.”
Dilbert goes on to add that he missed the red flags about Adams, calling him a Trump supporter with a “great Kevin Hart impersonation.” Wondering if the controversy meant that he’s also racist, Dilbert says he’s done some soul-searching after taking a personal day from the office, and he feels that a race war is imminent, and he’s preemptively picking a side.
“Are you ready? Because Dilbert’s ready,” he says. “I woke up this morning ready to take the streets and paint the city with the blood of the white man! Yeah, and I had a cup of coffee!”
Dilbert Gets Dropped by Virtually Every Newspaper
This controversy stems from comments Scott Adams made in a recent YouTube video. He spoke about the results of a poll quizzing people if it’s “okay to be white,” which found that 53% of Black adults surveyed agreed with the phrase “It’s OK to be white.” Adams was clearly unhappy with these numbers and advised white people to “get the hell away from Black people,” comments which led to Dilbert getting pulled from most publications int he country.
“If nearly half of all Blacks are not OK with White people — according to this poll, not according to me, according to this poll — that’s a hate group,” Adams said in the video.
He added, “Based on the current way things are going, the best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from Black people.”
Adams has since claimed that his comments were taken out of context. He also says he will continue his comic strip as Dilbert Reborn on March 13th, 2023, at Scottadams.locals.com.
