Julianna Pena was not intimidated by Amanda Nunes going into their bout at UFC 269 and is not intimidated at the prospect of running it back.
After shocking the MMA world with an upset of Amanda Nunes, the new UFC women’s featherweight champion Julianna Pena had her first interview as champion.
During the post-fight interview, Pena was asked about her next fight and whether or not she felt like a rematch with Amanda Nunes was warranted. Pena seemed not only accepting of that idea but supportive of it.
“I mean we can do it next week, next month, two months from now, whenever they want to do it I’m ready!” Pena said. “If she wants to do a rematch, we can do a rematch. I’ve always been a company girl, I’ve always been ‘point me in a direction and I’ll go there, you point, I’ll shoot,’ So it’s whatever they want to do.”
With a dominant submission victory, it is no surprise that Julianna Pena would willing to run it back
Despite being one of the biggest betting underdogs of all time in terms of betting odds, Pena beat Nunes in a definitive fashion. Not only did she lock in the rear-naked choke to secure the victory, but before that, she spent nearly three minutes exchanging blows with Nunes and even putting a clear hurt on the former champ. Pena landed 64 strikes to the head of Nunes in just the second round alone, which helped her gas the champion and secure the takedown which led to the submission victory.
This was Nunes’ first loss since 2014, putting an end to an impressive twelve-fight winning streak. Nunes has never lost back-to-back fights and has never lost to the same woman twice. Where Pena is the champion and has every right to be confident, she can not get too confident if she does decide to go back into the Octagon with the Lioness.
