Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has given his first comments since a video surfaced of him holding a gun in a nightclub.
In an interview with ESPN’s Jalen Rose, Morant says the gun in the video did not belong to him, but that he is taking responsibility for the incident.
“The gun wasn’t mine,” Morant told Rose. “It’s not who I am. I don’t condone any type of violence, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I’ve made a bad mistake.”
Morant has voluntarily missed the team’s last five games and is suspended by the NBA for an additional three, making him eligible to return on Monday.
The sports world is reacting to Morant’s comments.
“Really hate everything about all of this,” one fan said.
“No one deserves to be defined by their worst mistakes,” another fan said. “All he can do is take accountability and move forward.”
“I think there’s been enough jokes and everything surrounding this,” said another fan. “Now time to let him grow from it.”
The gun incident was the latest in a series of troubling situations Morant had been involved in, including allegedly assaulting a teenager after a pickup basketball game in the offseason.
