NBA commissioner Adam Silver sent a message on Tuesday to pay respect to NBA legend Willis Reed after news of his death.

“Willis Reed was the ultimate team player and consummate leader,” Silver said in a statement. The commissioner said that watching Reed and the Knicks in the early 1970s were some of his “earliest and fondest memories of NBA basketball.”

Silver said that Reed’s infamous comeback from injury in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals was “one of the most iconic moments in all of sports.”

“Willis was a decorated player who took great pride in his consistency,” Silver said of the two-time Finals MVP and former league MVP. Reed is also among the players named to both the NBA’s 50th and 75th anniversary teams.

In his statement, Silver would go on to highlight Reed’s accomplishments from his post-NBA career. “Willis mentored the next generation as a coach, team executive and proud HBCU alumnus,” Silver said.

Reed is undoubtedly the greatest player to come from Grambling State University in Louisiana.

The school is known for its illustrious football program that produced players like Hall of Famers Charlie Joiner and Willie Davis, as well as Super Bowl-winning quarterback Doug Williams.
