A free concert at Cheesman Park, a rainbow rollerskating pop-up and more things to do in Denver

En garde, titans!

Friday. Given Colorado Symphony’s media prowess and innovative programming, it’s sometimes easy to forget it is far from the only accomplished orchestral group in the metro area. Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, another excellent outfit, this weekend will offer a free, picnic-friendly concert at Capitol Hill’s Cheesman Park that further underscores that point.

“Clash of the Titans,” as the program is called, will feature “two classical-era foils headlin(ing) our season premiere,” the company said in a press statement. That includes the work of Joseph Bologne, a.ka. the composer and noted fencer Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and his first symphony, followed by DPO principal clarinet player Kwami Barnett taking on Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto before the epic finale, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter.”

The concert runs 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Pavilion at Cheesman Park, 1900 E. 11th Ave. While the event is free, registration is encouraged at eventbrite.com. And yes, you can bring booze — as long as you pack it out.

Earning your fancy brunch

Sunday. You can’t spell “brunch” without “run” — or at least that’s the thinking behind the Brunch Run on Sunday, Oct. 10, at Central Park in Denver. Upon finishing, 5K and 10K racers will be rewarded pre-packaged food they can pair with mimosas from Korbel and Natalie’s Juice, Bloody Marys from The Real Dill pickle company and Tito’s vodka, and coffee from Super Coffee.

Each person will also be sent home with a brunch box stuffed with themed goodies, including pancake mix from Picky Bars and a commemorative mug.

A splash of color, and speed

Saturday. This weekend sees the debut of “Welcome to Rainbow Dome,” a wonderful-looking immersive-art and rollerskating pop-up led by some of the city’s most innovative visual artists. Frankie Toan, who helped launch last year’s queer haunted house, “Nowhere to Go,” and Therin Zimmerman are using the event to introduce their new Rainbow Dome business venture, but the pop-up is all about accessible fun.

If Meow Wolf and Casa Bonita are too sedentary (and crowded), immerse yourself in this preview event for Toan and Zimmerman’s eventual, permanent Rainbow Dome location, which will also offer skating paths through custom-made artistic environments. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Plaza at Centennial Center Park.
