Damian Lillard has (finally) asked the Portland Trail Blazers for a trade.
The All-Star guard will be leaving the only NBA organization he’s ever known at some point in the near future, with several teams reportedly expected to be involved in pursuit.
The Miami Heat are reportedly Lillard’s preferred new team, but they aren’t the only franchise being mentioned. A potential dark horse for Lillard seems to be the San Antonio Spurs.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that Lillard has “a deep respect” for the San Antonio organization.
The Heat is Lillard’s preference here. But he also has a deep respect for the San Antonio Spurs organization, sources told ESPN. https://t.co/IXhiZwJ24V

Surely, the fact the Spurs are being mentioned one week after drafting a generational prospect No. 1 overall is merely a coincidence.
Smart money remains on the Heat, but it will be interesting to see if San Antonio tries to add Lillard and rebuild quickly with him and 19-year-old Victor Wembanyama, this year’s aforementioned top pick.
In 11 season with the Trail Blazers, Lillard earned seven All-Star selections and seven All-NBA teams, including first-team honors in 2018.
He averaged 25.2 points and 6.7 assists per game with Portland, while shooting 37.2% from three-point range and 89.5% at the free throw line.
