ABBA stars deliver verdict on Eurovision 2024 reunion

ABBA have finally broken their silence about the band’s future with the Eurovision Song Contest following Sweden’s triumphant win just a few weeks ago.

Swedish star Loreen just beat the likes of Finland, Israel, Italy and the United Kingdom in 2023’s Eurovision competition. Her win means 2024’s contest will be held in Sweden for the first time since 2016.

Since then, fans of ABBA have been theorising that the band will reunite at the 2024 celebration to show off their talents in front of the world – but Benny Andersson has other ideas.

Speaking on BBC’s Newsnight, Andersson said there was “no way” the band would be getting back together for a performance, or even appear together on stage.

“I don’t want to,” he said. “And if I don’t want to, the others won’t.”

Andersson doubled down by adding: “It’s the same for all four of us. Someone says no – it’s a no.”

A reunion for ABBA in 2024 would mark the 50th anniversary of the band’s unity, and therefore make the occasion even more iconic.

However, Björn Ulvaeus added: “We can celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage.”

Earlier this month, Ladbrokes slashed odds on ABBA reuniting in Sweden next year to an incredible 6/4.

The company’s Alex Apati said: “How can Eurovision chiefs resist the thought of an ABBA reunion? The stars seem to have aligned and fans can start preparing for what feels like an inevitable and fitting comeback in 12 months from now, if the latest odds are anything to go by.”

These new odds followed a source from The Sun speaking about how likely the reunion was going to be.

The source told the publication: “After Sweden won, people are going to be putting their Money, Money, Money on an ABBA reunion.

“They won Eurovision in Brighton in April 1974 and next year will be the 50th anniversary of that. Even if it’s their ABBA-tars performing a hologram show, fans are desperate for it.”

BBC Newsnight airs tonight at 10:30pm on BBC Two.
