Abbie Chatfield has stepped out in public for the first time since issuing a grovelling apology to former bestie Brooke Blurton.
Chatfield was eviscerated in a post from Blurton for stealing her thunder a day before the finale of The Bachelorette, which Blurton starred in this season.
Blurton had extended an invitation to Chatfield to appear on the final episode of the dating show, to appear as her ‘best friend’.
But before the finale went to air, Blurton went off at her friend, labelling her a “privileged white woman” and “narcissist” in a blistering Instagram post.
Chatfield’s crime was to make public her relationship with Konrad Bien-Stephens, who was one of the early contestants on the show.
Chatfield took to Instagram to apologise on Thursday.
Chatfield said she mistook a message from Blurton as giving her blessing to their union, then subsequently uploaded a post of her with Bien-Stephens.
“I see with hindsight that this assumption was naïve,” she wrote.
“I now understand the timing of publicly sharing our relationship should have been more considered and that is my fault.
“I didn’t take into account the Australian media landscape and the inherent privilege that I hold as a white woman.
“My actions had the potential to undermine the importance that this pivotal season of The Bachelorette holds to the First Nations and LGBTQIA+ Communities.
“This is an extremely important conversation to be having.
“In future, this will be at the forefront of my mind and I will continue to listen to and amplify minority communities, and endeavour to learn.
“I’m sorry.”
Less than 24 hours after the furore, Chatfield was back out in her natural habitat – recording herself with her phone.
She was appearing at a Body Shop event.
“Hi everyone, I’m here with Heidi, my gorgeous new bestie, we have matching colourful eye shadow which has really bonded us, also a Gemini, I mean, what’s going on – obviously,” Chatfield said into a gale-force wind.
“She is a young carer and she’s here with the body shop and Little Dreamers which is an amazing charity.”
Little Dreamers supports young people who provide unpaid care for a family member with a disability, illness or addiction.
