ABBOTT: 1979 concludes Saladin Ahmed & Sami Kivelä’s supernatural noir trilogy

Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä‘s supernatural noir series Abbott is getting set for its concluding installment. BOOM! Studios will release Abbott: 1979, the third and final entry in the trilogy, this fall. The first issue of the miniseries will hit stores in October.

Here’s how BOOM! describes Abbott: 1979:

On the eve of the 1980s and the Reagan Administration, Detroit is burdened with an oppressive darkness–both political and supernatural. Dejected and tough tabloid reporter Elena Abbott, who previously defeated the occult forces responsible for her husband’s death, must dig herself out from rock bottom if she’s going to save Detroit from the Umbra, one last time… Elena will have to contend with the dark cloud hanging over Detroit… and over her own life.

Along with a main cover by Taj FrancisAbbott: 1979 #1 will sport variant covers by Justine Florentino and Nimit Malavia, among others yet to be revealed.

Ahmed and Kivelä’s Abbott launched its first five-issue miniseries from BOOM! in 2018. A follow-up, Abbott: 1973, released its five-issue run in 2021. Both series were award-nominated, with the first miniseries being a Hugo Award finalist for Best Graphic Story in 2019, and the team of Ahmed and Kivelä nominated for an Ignyte Award for Best Comics Team for the follow-up miniseries in 2022.

In a statement announcing the finale, Ahmed, Kivelä, and BOOM! Executive Editor Eric Harburn all expressed their enthusiasm at bringing the series to readers:

“I couldn’t be more excited to bring you the next (and final!) chapter in the saga of hard-nosed reporter Elena Abbott, sorcerous savior of the city of Detroit,” said Ahmed. “ABBOTT: 1973 left Elena in a grim place, and things have only gotten worse since — for her and her beloved city. Now Detroit itself is being consumed — eaten alive by the Umbra. And it will take all Elena’s got to keep her own spark from being snuffed out. From the beginning I’ve imagined ABBOTT as a three-act story, and I’m positively thrilled to team with the awe-inspiring Sami to bring this story to its epic conclusion.”

“It’s always a pleasure to return to Detroit with Elena. I hope the readers are as excited about ABBOTT: 1979 as I am!” said Kivelä.

“We’re beyond thrilled to be working with Saladin and Sami again to bring ABBOTT back for its final chapter,” said Executive Editor, Eric Harburn. “Ever since the series debut in 2018, Elena’s journey has been a prescient, harrowing look at American society through the lens of Detroit – and ABBOTT: 1979 carries on that tradition in brilliant and unexpected ways.”
