About that lavish Getty wedding where Gavin Newsom returned to the spotlight

As Gov. Gavin Newsom’s unusual 13-day absence from the public eye sparked a flurry of online speculation, San Francisco’s high society knew where he was on Saturday.

The usually highly visible Newsom makes his first public appearance since Oct. 27 at an economic summit Tuesday in Monterey, but three days earlier, when the #Wheresgavin meme was trending on Twitter, the governor was one of the VIP guests at the lavish San Francisco City Hall wedding of Ivy Love Getty, the great-granddaughter of J. Paul Getty and one of the heiresses to the Getty family fortune, according to a detailed report of the wedding festivities by Vogue.

Getty, a 26-year-old actress and model, married photographer Tobias Alexander Engel in a ceremony officiated by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Mayor London Breed was another VIP guest, and the “Queens Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy was one of 14 bridesmaids for the ceremony in the city hall rotunda, Vogue reported. The bride walked down the aisle in an haute couture gown that sparkled with broken mirror shards, from John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

No doubt Newsom wasn’t just a guest because he’s governor, but because of his long association with the Getty family, who have played an important role in his personal, professional and political life.

Newsom’s father, Bill, became lifelong friends with Gordon Getty, Ivy Getty’s grandfather, in high school. Many accounts also describe how Gordon and his late socialite wife, Ann, came to view Newsom as a son, with the family helping to fund his early wine shop and restaurant ventures with their son, Billy Getty.

The Getty family also has been “a mainstay” for Newsom as he has pursued his political ambitions as San Francisco mayor, California’s lieutenant governor and governor, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Newsom recently survived a bruising Sept. 14 recall election, which was largely sparked by GOP anger over his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also by criticism that he’s an elitist who flouted his own COVID restrictions to dine at the French Laundry.

Being the guest at Ivy Getty’s wedding will no doubt add to critics’ impression that Newsom regularly hangs out with people who have no sense of regular-people struggles — people like the bride, who Vogue said attends Paris Fashion Week, got engaged on the jet-set island of Capri and went through multiple designer outfit changes during her four-day wedding extravaganza, which costs who knows how much.

As Washington Post national correspondent Philip Bump observed about the wedding:

Newsom’s appearance at Getty’s wedding ceremony also occurred as rumors were circulating that something was amiss with him. His last public appearance was on Oct. 27, when he proudly received his COVID-19 booster shot. He then made the surprise decision to back out of a Nov. 1-3 trip to Scotland for a United Nations conference on climate change, one of his pet projects.  Some of Newsom’s more conspiratorial-minded critics wondered if he was lying low to hide a bad reaction to the booster shot.

His office on Monday sought to dispel any concerns, saying he would be back in the public eye on Tuesday.

“Last week Governor Newsom worked in the Capitol with staff on urgent issues including COVID-19 vaccines for kids, boosters, ports, the forthcoming state budget and California’s continued economic recovery,” said Press Secretary Daniel Lopez. “He will have public events this week related to the economy and vaccines.”

Meanwhile, there’s Ivy Getty’s wedding, which could be the grandest, Getty-associated San Francisco wedding since 2001, when Newsom married his first wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle.

After Newsom and Guilfoyle exchanged vows at St. Ignatius Church, they celebrated with a lavish reception at the Pacific Heights mansion of Gordon and Ann Getty. Newsom is now married to Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and Guilfoyle is dating Donald Trump Jr.

Ivy Getty and her groom also enjoyed a Getty mansion reception on Saturday night, according to Vogue, but preceding the reception was their city hall ceremony in the rotunda, which Vogue said was totally transformed by celebrity event planner Stanlee Gatti. He and his crew hung turquoise and rose-pink velvet drapes from the archways and a “waterfall” of pale pink orchids from the grand staircase railings.

Guests had been asked to mask up before Pelosi entered the rotunda and took her position at the microphone. A photo from the event shows that people in the wedding party didn’t throw their masks in the air, but some guests did.

It may be that some people going mask-less during the ceremony is allowed under an Oct. 7 order from Breed’s office and the city’s department Department of Public Health. The order says that people in certain indoor settings “may remove their masks if the employer or host of the gathering can control access to the setting and verify 100% full vaccination of everyone in the setting.”

It’s likely that guests had to show their vaccination cards before entering the ceremony, as that requirement was mentioned by Vogue for another pre-wedding event.

People had to present their cards for the “British Invasion Mod Party,” Thursday night at The Palace of Fine Arts, which kicked off the four days of festivities.

Mark Ronson DJed, and Earth Wind & Fire performed at the party, which was inspired by “Barberella,” the 1968 sci-fi film starring Jane Fonda, Vogue said. Guests, arriving in sexy sequins, gogo boots, and “big half-up, half-down” ’60s hair, could start partying “as soon as their vaccination cards were checked and their phones were locked and stowed away in pouches,” Vogue added.

On Friday, guests joined Getty and Engel for a picnic lunch in the Presidio, Vogue said, adding that “IV drips were at the ready for anyone in need of help recovering from the night before.” That evening, “an intimate group” gathered for the wedding rehearsal at city hall, followed by “an intimate dinner” at Quince restaurant, Vogue added.
