The two-story Market Hall building that for 35 years housed trailblazing Italian restaurant, Oliveto, will soon be home to a new farm-to-table destination.
ACRE Kitchen & Bar, from chef and co-owner Dirk Tolsma and managing partner Pete Sittnick, is slated to open by the end of the month in the Rockridge District space at 5655 College Ave. in Oakland. The industry veterans announced their plans for a California-driven, Mediterranean-influenced restaurant back in July, following Oliveto’s permanent closure in April.
In a Dec. 13 press release, the new restaurateurs shared details about the upstairs dining room menu, which will offer a “playful and approachable” dishes, like Steak Tartare with preserved lemon and coriander; Saffron Risotto with smoked tallow butter; and An American in Provence, a seafood salad with pastis reduction, mixed winter pollens and blossoms. Downstairs, where there is a stove oven, the dishes will be more casual. Look for pizzas, tinned fish and cheese plates.
Oakland resident and designer Doug Washington (Kientz Hall in San Anselmo, Salt House in San Francisco) has transformed the interior with warm woods and natural elements, including tall plants and trees. Vintage Peill & Putzler orange glass pendants from the 1970s, retro fabrics and vibrant colorful accents will contrast a background of neutral tones.
Opening week hours will be for dinner from 4 to 9 p.m., with downstairs lunch to follow soon after, from 11 a.m. daily. Reservations are via OpenTable. Details: www.acrekitchenandbar.com.
