Across the Spider-Verse Star Hailee Steinfeld Would Love to Play Live Action Spider-Woman

Following the success of the animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and the recent announcement that Miles Morales will soon make the leap into live action, star Hailee Steinfeld was asked whether she would be interested in taking the same leap with Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. And she replied that it would be the easiest “Yes!” of her career. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Steinfeld was then asked how her performance might differ should she ever bring Spider-Woman to live action life.

“That’s an interesting question. To answer the second part of your question, I generally thought that you would make things bigger in animation, but in this film and with these characters, there’s a lot of importance on being grounded and being real and feeling authentic. There may have been a time where I felt the need to overcompensate because it wasn’t live-action. It wasn’t me doing the thing. So I felt like in order for you to feel it on the other end, I had to go bigger, but I very quickly realized that there’s no need for that. With everything that’s going on and all the different animation styles and the music being such a huge part and the score being so moving, all I had to do was feel as real in the material as possible. So, would I deliver the lines differently in live-action? That’s such an interesting thing. I imagine if they’re coming from the same place, it would feel similar, but with some physicality added in there, it would inherently be different.”

Steinfeld went on to reveal what scenes she would love to recreate in a live action Spider-Woman movie, with the Hawkeye star hoping for both emotional beats alongside wild stunts.

“I would love to do the scene between Gwen and her father where she reveals her secret identity. That was the first that came to mind, and then, honestly, any scene in this film where Gwen is doing something that would require me to do some wild, wild stunt that I wouldn’t consider doing anywhere else.”

A Spider-Woman Movie Is Coming “Sooner” Than Expected

Sony Pictures Releasing

Whispers of a Gwen Stacy Spider-Verse spinoff have circulated since the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse back in 2018. And while not much has been revealed, producer Avi Arad recently teased that audiences will see a Spider-Woman outing “sooner than you expect. I cannot tell you yet, but it’s coming.” While it was assumed that the Spider-Woman project would be a spinoff from the Spider-Verse trilogy, could we instead be getting a live action take in conjunction with the Miles Morales movie? Time will tell.

For now, Gwen Stacy is plenty busy on the big screen in the critically acclaimed box office success that is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Picking up over a year after the events of the first movie, Miles Morales unexpectedly finds himself journeying through the Multiverse to meet its protectors, a group of Spider-People known as the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O’Hara. But, when Miles finds himself at odds with Miguel and the Spider-Society on how to handle the threat and when the heroes clash, our hero is pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out now in theaters, with the third outing, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
