Fixed, the latest film from acclaimed creator of Hotel Transylvania and Star Wars: Clone Wars, Genndy Tartakovsky, will voice cast Adam Devine, Idris Elba and Kathryn Hahn. Tartakovsky will helm the R-rated animation film that is laced with adult humor and classic storytelling.
The story follows an ordinary dog named Bull who discovered that he is about to get neutered the next day. This revelation sparks Bull’s desire for one last grand adventure with his best friends during the final 24 hours before his life-changing operation. The movie, which is slated for completion in September, is backed by New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures Animation as reported by Variety.
Tartakovsky pitched the concept to Sony in 2010. The unique premise, which elicited laughter from the room, was conceived spontaneously. The concept of the film was to craft something that has the characteristics and charm of Lady and the Tramp or 101 Dalmatians with the twist of adult humor into it. Tartakovsky said the goal was not to shock people but rather make them laugh. He hopes that beneath the adult humor, audiences will discover a heartfelt tale of friendship and romance.
Fixed boasts an ensemble voice cast that extends beyond Devine, Elba, and Hahn. Devine will lend his voice to Bull, with Elba taking on the role of Rocco, Bull’s buddy. The voice cast also includes Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, River Gallo, and Michelle Buteau. Kathryn Hahn, previously seen in Hotel Transylvania, will add depth to Bull’s love interest, Honey. Hahn expressed her desire to take on a raunchier character, as opposed to a sweet girl in the background, a decision that the producer, Michelle Murdocca, admitted brought the character to life.
How Fixed Is a Balance of Humor and Authenticity.
The director lauds the cast for their comedic timing, stating that finding someone who understands this aspect as a voice actor makes their job much easier. Tartakovsky appreciates when voice actors can truly embody their characters, allowing the audience to forget the familiar voices and fully immerse themselves in the narrative.
Fixed stands out not only for its contemporary humor but also for its celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation, a form that Tartakovsky describes as a lost art in today’s era of computer-generated graphics. The film is a tribute to ‘old school’ animation classics like Bugs Bunny, Tex Avery and 1950s Disney. The movie creators were thrilled to have signed the services of animators they never thought would’ve been available.
Tartakovsky’s humor for the film was inspired by The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. The characters from the film are caricatures of real people along with their exaggerated traits. Tartakovsky even included his own high school friends into the mix of characters. Some adjustments were made to make the character feel grounded and real.
At the end of the day, Tartakovsky only wanted to entertain people and give them a good laugh for an hour or two. He knew the difficulties in doing so, and the challenge of doing comedy in animation is amplified. It’s a challenge that drew the creator into the genre. With Fixed, he aims to create laughter from scratch, further enhancing the timeless appeal of animation.
