As a result, the creative team of the AEW will have the chance to get him involved in the event. It now appears that a top wrestler from NJPW who also had a short stint in the WWE, is being nurtured as his opponent.

According to the reports of Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, CM Punk vs. KENTA has been internally discussed as a possibility. However, things need to fall into place for this to make the match happen at Forbidden Door 2023.

“The internally discussed opponent brings a different gravity to the situation. We’ve learned that CM Punk has been discussed as KENTA’s opponent, which could help bring closure to an over-decade back-and-forth between the two.”

Earlier this week, KENTA tweeted to reveal his mind that he’s ready to fight at Forbidden Door if the money is right. As things currently stand, KENTA is indeed being planned to be part of the AEW – NJPW show.

The feud between Punk and KENTA goes way back and it revolves around their similar finishing maneuvers. Throughout their careers, both these men have taken shots at the other, from time to time but never had the opportunity of a face-off.

KENTA was the one to innovate the Go To Sleep finisher but it’s Punk who’s mostly utilized and popularized the move in the circuit. The masters of the GTS can finally settle their differences at Forbidden Door.

For professional wrestling fans, CM Punk vs. KENTA is a dream match that never happened since they were never under the same pro-wrestling banner. After Punk left WWE, KENTA joined the company under the name of Hideo Itami.

Now that Tony Khan has promised to the AEW fanbase that Forbidden Door II is going to be the best of 2023, they’re really looking forward to this mouth-watering match within three weeks from now.

Before that CM Punk will make his first appearance for AEW since the 2022 All Out last September during the June 17 debut episode of AEW Collision where he’s scheduled to feature in the six-man tag team main event.

As for AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door 2023, the pay-per-view will take place at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 25th. The currently confirmed match for the show is given below:

– Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada

– IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Will Ospreay
