Dynamic Herb Cebu couldn’t prevent another rough week for Filipino clubs on the continental front after being battered 8-2 by Australian side Macarthur FC in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup on Thursday in Sydney.
The Gentle Giants had no answer for the rampage of the host squad as they conceded all eight before the final 10 minutes of normal time of their away match held at Campbell Town Sports Stadium.
It took an own goal by Macarthur defender Matthew John Jurman in the 84th followed by Rintaro Hama’s header off a set piece five minutes later for Cebu to not only avoid a shutout but allowed the club to finally score in its maiden AFC Cup stint.
Cebu, however, dropped below the four-team Group F with two defeats in two games.
All three teams from the Philippines Football League are still in search of at least a point after two matchdays in AFC club tourneys.
The week started with Kaya-Iloilo losing to South Korea’s Incheon United in the AFC Champions League while Stallion-Laguna’s own AFC Cup campaign ended with a 9-1 loss to Central Coast Mariners of Australia.
All three are slated to resume their domestic duties this weekend in the second leg of the Copa Paulino Alcantara quarterfinals.
Cebu faces Mendiola FC 1991 on Monday holding a 2-0 aggregate lead.
