Suffice to say it’s been a turbulent few years for the royals. In the past few years alone, we’ve witnessed Britain’s most famous family navigate a whole series of ups and downs.

Yes, there have been highs: Meghan and Harry’s celebrity-studded fairytale wedding at St. George’s Chapel in 2018; the birth of Prince Louis earlier that year; the weddings of both Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice in 2018 and 2020 respectively; the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge getting a new family dog, Orla, this April.

But each event has been overshadowed by a certain level of drama and unprecedented scandal.

To name but a few examples, we’ve seen Meghan and Harry’s dramatic departure from royal life in 2019, which saw the couple all but lose their titles after moving to Canada, then America and (somewhat clumsily) trying to renegotiate their involvement on their own terms.

Then there’s the continued horrifying scandal around the allegations of sexual abuse against Prince Andrew, the father of Beatrice and Eugenie, following the Epstein scandal. The events have seen him stripped of his military affiliations and patronages and all but retired from public life after reaching a multi-million pound out-of-court settlement with Virginia Guiffre in March this year.

Meanwhile, even the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – usually far from controversy – faced their own drama during their recent royal tour to Jamaica, where they were faced with protests and told by the Jamaican prime minister that the country would be removing the Queen as head of state.

Finally, there was the death of the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021, bang in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic – and we will never forget the most tragic image of the Queen sitting alone, due to social distancing, at St. George’s Chapel during the funeral of her husband of more than 70 years.
