A NEW flight route from a Scots airport directly to London has been announced to begin next month.
Loganair has announced a new service from Orkney’s Kirkwall Airport direct to London City Airport.
The flight will run twice weekly, on a Tuesday and a Friday, beginning in April according to the Glasgow Times.
It’s understood the flight service will stop over in Dundee en-route, however passengers will not be required to leave the plane before continuing on down south.
The three-and-a-half-hour service is expected to encourage tourists to the Isle and provided “enhanced connectivity” as part of the airline’s expansion programme.
Flights from the island to Edinburgh are also expected to increase back to pre-pandemic levels to “bolster connectivity” with the rest of the country.
And flights to Fair Isle on Shetland are also expected to be reinstated for the first time since March 2019.
The airport will also see a new same-flight service to Bergen in Norway as part of it’s summer schedule.
Kirkwall Airport’s manager Kimberley Fisher said the expansion at the airport is a “great indication” the aviation industry is reacting positively to the rising demand and recovery following the pandemic.
Luke Lovegrove, chief commercial officer at Loganair, told the Glasgow Time: “We have been flying from Orkney for more than 50 years, operating the inter-isles air service since September 1967, and it remains a key destination for us as we grow our network.
“We are thrilled to enhance connectivity as part of an expansion programme for Orkney within our summer 2023 schedule.
“The new service to London City, as well as the increase in service to Edinburgh and the reinstated route to Fair Isle, not only bolsters connectivity for the local community but additionally encourages tourists from across the UK and beyond to visit the wonders of Orkney.”
Ms Fisher added: “Loganair’s new flights will offer the community more choice when it comes to travel and will also provide additional options for those wishing to visit Orkney, which in turn could provide a boost to the local economy.
“The connection with Edinburgh being restored to pre-pandemic levels and the return of flights to Fair Isle and Bergen, plus the addition of the London service are great indications that the aviation industry is emerging from the pandemic and reacting positively to pent up demand.”
