Airstream’s New Rangeline Touring Coach

Airstream, the 91-year-old company that launched the silver bullet trailer decades ago, continues its forward march with motorhomes designed to get you out on the road and keep you there, at least for a while.

The company’s new Rangeline Touring Coach is a vehicle for the nomadic traveler and weekend-warrior lifestyles. It’s designed so that long-term living is pretty easy, even if you’re just planning some long weekends in the meantime and only dreaming of living the van life one day.

The Rangeline Touring Coach is the latest addition to the brand’s lineup of Class B motorhomes. It is Airstream’s first motorized camper van built on the RAM ProMaster® 3500 chassis and features a hand-crafted, European-inspired interior and an electrical system that enables off-the-grid adventures. The 21-foot camper van is powered by a 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine with 276 horsepower and a TorqueFlite® nine-speed automatic transmission. It has a high-traction front-wheel-drive system and a low floor height for easy loading.

It does not have 4WD, so it’s not a true off-the-grid machine. On the other hand, the Rangeline comes in at about $83,000 less than Airstream’s Interstate 24X, the company’s actual off-road machine that uses a Sprinter van as its base. If you can live with that, the Rangeline Touring Coach will serve you well for many miles on many roads.

The Rangeline has created a smart interior living space for families, couples, and pets. There are four belted positions, divided between two captain’s chairs and a two-seat bench. The standard configuration sleeps two on an elevated bed, with storage in a “garage” below, and the optional pop-top expands the sleeping capacity to four people.

The designers wisely figured that a dog might well be one of the guests. Hence, they configured pet amenities into the design, with an integrated pet bowl pull-out drawer and exterior leash attachment on the running board.

The interior features a wet bath equipped with a sink, shower, and toilet. There are galley, sleeping, and living areas, and a flex table system offers expandable space for meals or work. One luxe touch is the soft-closing drawers and posi-lock cabinets for securing items while traveling.

The electrical system has a 270Ah lithium battery bank and a 2,000-watt power inverter, which allows you to stay remote for some time. All of the appliances are electric, from the 3.2 cubic foot refrigerator to the .4 cubic foot freezer. There’s also a stowable electric stovetop. The Rangeline has hydronic heating and a hot water system for on-demand hot water and interior heat powered by the gas tank. The Airstream’s 2.8 kW generator also draws fuel from the gas tank and can operate the air conditioner while away from other power sources. Those in search of solar panels will have to look at another vehicle.

Standard RV water hookups are concealed in an external compartment, while sewer and electric hookups are stowed below the vehicle.

This vehicle is built for those likely to bring along mountain bikes, skis, snowboards and paddleboards, among other toys. So Airstream installed Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE) panels on both rear doors, which permits customizable gear storage and easy access to outdoor equipment. The integrated L-track storage system allows you to safely secure larger equipment like bikes, fishing gear, and luggage.

“We’re in a new travel reality, where freedom and flexibility are top of mind for more and more people,” said Bob Wheeler, Airstream President and CEO. “Rangeline is the result of extensive research and dedication to understanding the van life movement and what customers want from their experience. It’s a thoughtfully-designed, highly capable, multi-purpose van that handles like a daily driver, and it’ll open a new world of Airstream adventures to one of the fastest growing segments in the RV industry.”

The MSRP of the Rangeline is $131,882. Visit Airstream for more details on the Rangeline Touring Coach.
