AJ Odudu lands new presenting role after dropping out of Strictly Come Dancing final

By her own admission, AJ Odudu was “devastated” to have dropped out of the Strictly Come Dancing tour following an injury. The 33-year-old presenter had to bow out of the BBC competition hours before the Grand Final after sustaining an ankle injury which has left her unable to dance in the tour. However, things are now looking up for the Blackburn presenter who has confirmed she’s going to be fronting a Channel 4 series.

AJ will be presenting Channel 4’s reality competition The Bridge for its “supersized” second season alongside survivalist Aldo Kane.

The series, which is being filmed in Vietnam, will see two teams battle it out to be the first to get their hands on a £200,000 jackpot.

For the eight-part series, 16 strangers will come together for the chance to win the cash prize, but they will be unaware of the seismic challenge they have to complete to take home the money.

It will be AJ’s first major television role since her stint on Strictly as a contestant in last year’s series where she Waltzed her way to the final with professional partner Kai Widdrington.

Discussing landing the new Channel 4 role, AJ Odudu said: “The opportunity to front The Bridge has happened almost serendipitously.

“From the Strictly Ballroom, I have taken off onto my next, new adventure. Literally.

“It’s so exciting to front a show that promises to push the envelope and I know The Bridge is going to be bold, full of excitement and filled with plenty of drama. Bring it on.”

Adventurer Aldo will join the competitors in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, to oversee the challenges which will test the teams’ nerves and ability.

Aldo, 42, said: “Over the last 25 years, I have been operating in some of the world’s most extreme, remote and hostile locations, but this is one of the highest-stake missions I’ve ever worked on.

“For those involved in the challenge, if they can survive the pressure, this could be a truly life-changing experience, for more reasons than just the prize money.

“The cash won’t come easy though, I am looking forward to putting the team through their paces and stretching their every fibre, from morals and emotions to basic camp craft and survival.”

In the new series, made by Manchester-based Workerbee, a Banijay UK company, the teams face a race to build a bridge over 1,000 feet of water in just 12 days to reach the money held on top of ‘Fortune Rock’

But will whoever reaches the money first choose to share it with their teammates?

During the building works the teams will face surprise dilemmas and temptations which are set to disrupt the entire competition.

Phil Harris, Channel 4’s head of entertainment and events, opened up on bringing AJ onboard for the reality show.

He explained: “AJ was a phenomenal host on The Big Breakfast, so I am thrilled she is joining to guide us through the action whilst Aldo reminds us just what an incredibly tough task this is.”

Steve Handley, commissioning editor for Channel 4, said: “I’m thrilled The Bridge is returning, with AJ at the helm and Aldo guiding the team through the adventure.

“It may look like paradise, but our cast of ordinary folks are going to have to achieve the extraordinary to get their hands on the prize. I can’t wait to see if they can do it!”

AJ shared a picture of herself and Aldo in Vietnam on her Twitter on Thursday and many of her followers commented on how excited they were to watch her host the show.

It has not yet been confirmed when the second series of The Bridge will land on Channel 4.
