Akira Live-Action Film Gets Promising Update

0

It seems like the Akira live-action movie might be happening after all. Announced a few years ago, the Hollywood adaptation of the acclaimed Japanese animation movie has been changing status, with many directors and creative teams getting on board just to abandon the project later. But now, it looks like it’s finally moving forward.

In 2019, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Taika Waititi would take the story to the big screen, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to produce with his Appian Way banner. Since then, news has been on and off, especially with the director having his plate full with many projects like Reservation Dogs, Our Flag Means Death, and Thor: Love & Thunder.

Waititi was one of the surprising absences at the Star Wars Celebration, but now that he’s set to direct and maybe star in his own movie for the franchise. But the live-action Akira might have been the reason for him not showing up at the event. According to Deadline veteran reporter Justin Kroll, Waititi is working on the project right now:

“Since everyone is wondering where his STAR WARS film is, if I were a betting man my guess is Taika’s next movie is his AKIRA movie at WB, which he put on shelf to do L&T. He never left the film and word is script should be into studio soon. Again nothing set in stone as the film would go through regular process before greenlight including figuring out a budget but sounds like all his focus is on that project.”
