Alan Shearer criticised David de Gea for his role in Arsenal’s controversial opener at Old Trafford.

Manchester United recorded a 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford as Cristiano Ronaldo bagged twice.

While Ronaldo made the headlines once again, a large amount of the talk came following Arsenal’s opener courtesy of Emile Smith Rowe.

While defending an Arsenal corner, United midfielder Fred accidentally stepped on De Gea’s heel causing the Spaniard to fall to the floor.

As De Gea waited for the whistle to blow for a foul the ball found itself to Smith Rowe on the edge of the box who smashed the it home while De Gea remained on the floor.

Referee Martin Atkinson didn’t blow his whistle before the ball hit the back of the net and so the goal stood despite Fred fouling his own team-mate.

Shearer believes De Gea shouldn’t have gone down from the challenge as he’d most likely have saved the shot if he’d carried on.

‘Goal, because I didn’t see or hear the referee blow,’ Shearer said at half-time.

‘I didn’t see a serious foul on the goalkeeper, and it’s only when you see it close that De Gea actually stands on him.

‘I don’t think I’m being too harsh here, I don’t think the game has changed that much, I think that happens in every game, someone standing on your foot or your ankle.

‘With him going down like that, not a care to where the ball is. Yes, they hurt, but I’m not sure he should be staying down like that.

‘He’s up a minute later and on his feet anyway, so it couldn’t have hurt that much.’
