England head coach Chris Silverwood is facing the sack following his side’s 4-0 thrashing by Australia in the Ashes and the ECB could install an interim coach for next month’s tour of the West Indies.
Managing director Ashley Giles last week submitted a report examining England’s Ashes failures to Andrew Strauss, chair of the ECB’s cricket committee.
Strauss then made his recommendations to the ECB board on Tuesday on how England can recover from their latest embarrassment Down Under and Silverwood is expected to be replaced.
Silverwood is also England’s chief selector and, with the squad for their upcoming three Test series in the Caribbean due to be named next week, a decision over his future will need to be made imminently.

However, with England set to leave for Antigua on February 24, it is unlikely that the ECB would be able to install a permanent replacement in time for that series.
As a result, they may look to appoint someone on an interim basis, like they did back in 2009 when Andy Flower took charge after Peter Moores was sacked before eventually getting the job permanently.
Although England could leave one of the current coaches in charge of that tour – assistant coach Paul Collingwood recently deputised for Silverwood during the T20I series against the West Indies – the Mail are reporting that Alec Stewart has emerged as a potential option.
The England legend is currently Surrey’s director of cricket and has previously been on the shortlist to become England’s head coach.

Stewart was considered to replace Trevor Bayliss back in 2019 and the ECB invited him to interview for the position, but he withdrew from consideration due to family reasons and Silverwood ultimately took over.
Now, the i report that Stewart would be keen to take over as interim coach for the West Indies series, although the ECB are yet to make an approach.
