Alejandro Garnacho’s brother may have confirmed Man Utd shirt number next season

Roberto Garnacho, the brother of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, may have confirmed speculation surrounding his shirt number next season. The Argentina international has been widely tipped to inherit the No 7 shirt from Cristiano Ronaldo after enjoying a breakthrough campaign.

On Friday, the Manchester Evening News reported that United were considering handing Garnacho the iconic number this summer.

The 18-year-old debuted against Chelsea last April and made 11 starts in his first full season as a senior player in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

However, after signing a new five-year contract at Old Trafford, United are said to be weighing up whether to make him the first teenage No 7 since Ronaldo in 2003.

And his brother’s social media activity could suggest that Garnacho is about to swap his No 49 with the No 7 next season.

Roberto posted an edit on Twitter showing Garnacho rocking the new number, famed in M16 due to its prestigious history of owners.

Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best are just a selection of the fabled names to have worn the No 7 shirt for United.

But it has been struck by a curse for over a decade, with those who have picked it up suffering struggles.

Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez all either swapped numbers or left the club before coming good as United’s No 7.

But there would be optimism that Garnacho is the player to turn the shirt’s fortunes around. He will expect a more prominent role in Ten Hag’s plans next term and could don the number to go with it.

Garnacho joined United from Atletico Madrid in September 2020 as a 16-year-old and quickly became one of the shining lights of the club’s academy.

He picked up the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at the end of the 2021/22 season, and his upward trajectory didn’t stop there.

Last term, Garnacho contributed five goals and five assists for the Red Devils. It’s a nice target to improve on in 2023/24, perhaps with the No 7 on his back.
