Alexander-Arnold admits Newcastle ‘disappointment’ despite Liverpool record

Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted he was ‘disappointed’ with elements of Liverpool’s win over Newcastle, despite the Reds setting a new English football record.

Jonjo Shelvey surprisingly put the visitors in front after just seven minutes when he fired in a stunning strike from outside the box.

But Liverpool dominated the game after that goal, enjoying an astonishing 75 per cent of the possession as they pinned the Magpies back in their own half for the majority of the contest.

The Reds were able to secure the win that their dominance deserved, with Diogo Jota getting them back on level terms after 21 minutes when he fired in from a rebound from his own header.

Mohamed Salah then took advantage of dreadful Newcastle defending to the Reds ahead before Alexander-Arnold delivered a stunning thunderbolt in the dying stages to wrap up the three points.

The victory was a vital one in Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge, especially as Chelsea could only draw with Everton.

They are now back within one point of leaders Manchester City and are set to face Tottenham on Sunday.

The win on Wednesday also saw them set a new record in English football, becoming the first top-flight side to reach the landmark of 2,000 victories.

Despite that though, Alexander-Arnold admitted his disappointment that Liverpool had failed to keep an 11^th clean sheet of the season in the league.

The goal that stopped them from reaching that was admittedly from the top drawer, but the right-back was still left downhearted.

“I think we limited them to little chances, we kind of knew the game would flow like that,” Alexander-Arnold told BT Sport.

“We’d dominate possession and they come and make it hard for us through counter-attacks and set pieces and things like that.

“So, it was always going to be a difficult one for us and obviously them scoring an early goal made it harder.

“Disappointed with the clean sheet but three points this time of the season is vitally important.”

As good as Shelvey’s strike was, Alexander-Arnold’s own stunner, for his second Premier League goal of the season, was equally impressive.

Substitute Roberto Firmino laid the ball back to him more than 25 yards out, with the Englishman taking a touch before unleashing a shot that flew past Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka.

Alexander-Arnold admitted that he had been waiting for some time to score a goal in that style, having failed with his previous attempts.

“I’ve been waiting for that for five years now,” he said.

“I’ve had a few from the edge of the box and dragged them and things like that and I caught that one sweet and it nestled in the top corner.”

With Chelsea having dropped points to Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City are quickly pulling away into a two-horse race for the title.

City have a one-point advantage over Klopp’s men heading into what will be a hectic festive fixture schedule.
