Alexis Sanchez netted a dramatic last-gasp winner in extra time to secure the Supercoppa Italiana for Inter Milan against Juventus.
The Chilean forward has remained a peripheral figure at the Nerazzurri this campaign – making just four starts across all competitions – but was the hero for Simone Inzaghi’s side at San Siro.
The Supercoppa is the annual football match contested by the winners of the Serie A and the Coppa Italia from the previous season, with league champions Inter coming out on top.
Weston McKennie had given Juve the lead in the 25th minute but the Milanese side struck back 10 minutes later as Lautaro Martinez netted from the penalty spot.

The game had appeared to be meandering towards a penalty shootout decider as the half-hour of extra time was a low-key affair, prior to Sanchez’s late winner.
Just as the game ticked past the 120-minute mark, the ball dropped to the Chilean inside the area after a knockdown from his former Manchester United teammate Matteo Darmian, and Sanchez made no mistake to fire past Bianconeri goalkeeper Mattia Perin.
The goal sparked wild celebrations on and off the pitch as the former Arsenal frontman whipped his shirt off and was mobbed in the aftermath by the entire squad.
A hopeful cross had been whipped into the box with Juve full-back Alex Sandro clumsily mis-controlling an attempted chest down to Giorgio Chiellini, who was beaten to the ball by Darmian to set up Sanchez for the close-range finish.

It was the most dramatic possible conclusion to the tie, with no injury time to be added to the second half of extra time meaning that Sanchez’s winning strike was the final kick of the game with no more time for Juve to respond.
Sanchez had been a 75th minute substitution from Inzaghi as he and Joaquin Correa were introduced to replace the established striking duo of Martinez and Edin Dzeko.
Sanchez’s winning goal was a huge moment for a player who, despite playing a role in Inter’s first Serie A title in 11 years last campaign, has struggled to rekindle his form in recent years.

Having hit 72 goals across his first three full seasons at Arsenal, his form dipped in his final half-season at the Gunners – where he was due to be out of contract – before joining Premier League rivals Manchester United that summer.
The former Udinese and Barcelona forward endured a miserable time at Old Trafford, scoring just five goals for the club spread across 45 appearances.
He initially joined Inter on a loan deal in the summer of 2019 before making the move permanent the following year.
Wednesday’s result ensured Inter’s sixth Supercoppa Italiana title – three short of record competition winners Juventus.
