Production has just started on the new PHEV at Alfa Romeo’s plant in Naples, Italy. It’s the brand’s first PHEV and includes a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and 90-kW electric motor, and will deliver a battery-only range of more than 48 kilometres on a charge, the automaker said. The battery takes 2.5 hours to fill up on a Level 2 charger.
The regular Tonale will carry a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine, making 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The PHEV uses a 1.3L turbocharged engine with hybrid motor, producing 285 horsepower. As with other PHEVs, once the stored charge depletes, the system reverts to conventional gas-electric hybrid operation, so there’s no “range anxiety” as long as there’s gas in the tank.

Both Tonale versions will come standard with all-wheel drive. Oddly enough, U.S. buyers will only get the PHEV, while Canadians will have the choice of both.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will start in Sprint trim, at $44,995 in gasoline-only, and $54,995 for the PHEV. The upper Veloce trim will be $46,495 for gas and $57,495 for the PHEV, along with a $2,095 destination charge on all. The plug-in hybrid will qualify for the Canadian federal EV rebate of up to $5,000, along with any applicable provincial rebates.
Features will include an adaptive frequency damping suspension, Uconnect 5 infotainment system with Alfa Connect connectivity platform, and several driver assistance systems.
