You know Alicia Vikander from acclaimed performances in films like Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, and the HBO Max series Irma Vep.
And you probably know that she shares a child with husband and equally celebrated actor Michael Fassbender.
When Alicia revealed that they’d welcomed a child last year, she declined to go in depth about her experience of becoming a mother. “No, I think I’ll wait with that one,” she said.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Alicia decided to open up about her journey to motherhood, and she revealed that she had a miscarriage.
“We have a child now, but it took us time,” she said while discussing the miscarriage she had before welcoming her first child.
She described the experience as “so extreme, painful to go through,” while drawing a parallel to her and Fassbender’s 2016 film The Light Between Oceans, which focuses on a couple that deals with several miscarriages.
“That film has another meaning now,” she said.
Alicia also discussed how juggling parenthood and acting has been “intense,” and that Michael would come to sets where she was shooting with their child “just so he could see my face.”
And she revealed that she and Michael regularly switch on parenting duties, which means occasionally turning down projects to stay home with their child.
“We do every second job,” she said. “One stays at home while the other works.”
