Bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling reacts to two illegal knees at UFC 280.
It is no mystery that the UFC bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling is familiar with illegal knee strikes. At UFC 259, Sterling controversially won the bantamweight belt after taking an illegal knee strike from interim bantamweight champion Petr Yan.
Since the infamous incident, Sterling has been a poster boy for illegal knee strikes in the UFC, with many fans questioning the outcome of the championship bout. In what is largely considered the most anticipated fight card of 2022, the co-main event between Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw for the bantamweight title at UFC 280 holds large implications for the bantamweight division.
After Karol Rosa delivered an illegal knee to Lina Länsberg’s face in the first preliminary bout of UFC 280, a point was deducted from Rosa, though she still pulled through to take the victory. Then, in the third preliminary bout of the day, Abubakar Nurmagomedov delivered another illegal knee to Gadzhi Omargadzhiev, though no point was deducted, leading many fans at a loss as to what could be considered a point deduction.
