He said all of the food cooked by Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) for the Christmas spread was in fact real.
The actor added: “The Christmas special was about being around the buffet for an entire week.
“It was just heaven, and by the end of the week, we could really have at it.
“Half of what gets cooked we get to eat. Home economics come in and cook this amazing dinner backstage.
“We just have to eat it. It’s so nice, you have got to be careful before those types of scenes come right after lunch.
The Christmas special was filmed during the summer of 2021 and Callum said it was an unusual time to get into the festive spirit.
He said: “It’s so weird, in season one we were lucky enough to film the Christmas episode just before we broke up for Christmas.
“We came back to finish episodes five and six of season one and it was Christmas at the height of June.
“It was the first time it was completely out of season but it was really nice to see the place done up.”
The star also praised his other co-stars, the animals he got to work with throughout the series.
He continued: “I just have so much fun with the animals, the dogs especially.
“We have the friendliest animals and it’s really like working with an actual scene partner, it’s the heart of the show.”
Speaking about what his character Tristan loves most about the festive season, he said: “I definitely think it’s Mrs Hall’s cooking.
“Without a shadow of a doubt. She always puts on such a good dinner for Tristan.
“And very much like me, it’s probably his favourite dinner of the year.”
The All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special airs on Channel 5 at 9pm on Christmas Eve.
