On the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Kwento Comics, the first all-women, all-Asian comic book company highlighting Filipino and Asian mythology through the medium of graphic novels, announced that it is offering a GlobalComix promo code for its series The Mask of Haliya, written by Kaitlyn Fajilan and Jenapher Zheng, to people attending the publisher’s Free Komiks Day event in Los Angeles.
Founded by Cecilia Lim and Waverley Lim, Kwento Comics’ mission is to create stories that introduce Filipino and other Asian mythology through riveting contemporary fantasy comic series that will inspire young women everywhere and spark their warrior goddess within to face the future with hope, compassion, and grace, born from an understanding of the past and the struggles of their ancestors.

The debut series, The Mask of Haliya, is a supernatural, multi-perspective saga about a Filipina teen, Marisol Reyes, who discovers a wooden mask at her great-grandmother’s wake. Destiny beckons in the form of a giant sea serpent, an ancient battle, and a grim vision of the future. The series features art by Renoida Renovilla, Charyn Duy, Minerva Fox, Helena Wu, Liezl Buenaventura, Mikela Kaufman, Kristian Laroa, and Ruth Ann Roman.
To celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, Kwento Comics will be in attendance at Free Komiks Day on Saturday, May 6, at HiFi Kitchen, located at 1667 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, in Historic Filipinotown, from 1 PM – 5 PM, where attendees will receive a promo code for one free download of The Mask of Haliya #1 exclusively on GlobalComix.
Attending the event alongside Kwento Comics is Kid Hero Productions, publisher of the Lumpia with a Vengeance comic books. In addition to being able to claim your free digital code from Kwento Comics, the FCBD event will include themed food and one-of-a-kind comics. Oh, and the opportunity to meet some of these fabulous, boundary-pushing creators!
