All you need to know about UFC 283, Teixeira returns for title fight vs Hill

Glover Teixeira will get the chance to become a two-time UFC champion in his home country when he faces Jamahal Hill at UFC 283 this month.

Teixeira, who dropped the belt in his first title defence last year, was due to rematch for the lightweight strap at UFC 282 only for Jiri Prochazka to pull out and vacate it due to injury.

The 43-year-old, who originally tapped out Jan Blachowicz in October 2021 to become the oldest first-time champion in company history, then declined the chance to fight for the vacant belt against Magomed Ankalaev.

Blachowicz and Ankalaev battled for five rounds for the available gold at UFC 282 instead but their fight was declared a split draw.

UFC president Dana White reacted by booking Teixeira back into the main event scene for the still vacant 205lb title in the first main event of 2023.

His opponent Hill boasts an 11-1 record, with the lone defeat of his MMA career coming to Paul Craig – who will also be on the card – in 2021.

Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno will also clash to become the unified UFC flyweight champion in the first quadrilogy in UFC history.

UFC 283: Date and how to follow

UFC 283 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 21 and is being held at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The prelim action will start at 11pm for UK fans with the main card getting underway from 1am on Sunday morning. Teixeira vs Hill can then be expected at around 4am.

The action will be shown on BT Sport 1 with their coverage starting at 1am.

“I think that’s a good matchup,” deposed champion Prochazka told CBS Sports on the main-event.

“I don’t know if Hill deserves that opportunity to fight for the title. But for Glover, it’s great because he will fight in Rio, in his home.

“So that, for him, is very good. I’m looking forward to that fight. I’m looking forward to their performances.”

“For me, it doesn’t matter who will be the titleholder,” Prochazka added. “I know the title is mine and will be, and I will come for that.

“I just took that [Teixeira rematch] because I felt that Glover deserved that opportunity. It was not from my deepest motivation, but from my ego.

“I want to show a better performance and I was not satisfied with the first fight.

“I don’t need to fight Glover again. If he will be the champion, I will fight him. I will fight whoever. [It] doesn’t matter. It’s not about the opponent.”
