Two alleged thieves, who we’ll call Harry and Lloyd (true identities unknown), were busted down in Buford, Georgia after stealing over $8,000 in electronics from a local Sam’s Club, Gwinnett County Police told outlet Insider. How local a Sam’s Club? Very local. Around 10 miles from where they were caught, to be exact.

That distance is relevant. See, the duo’s chosen getaway car for this alleged heist was a Tesla (model unknown or unreleased, but Detective Kana notes the presence of gull-wing doors, which you’ll find only on a Model X) and it seems the two suspected thieves were more focused on the loot opposed to the route.

That lack of proper planning means they ran out of juice and stopped around 10 miles away from the scene to charge up said Tesla, and in that span of time, were promptly caught, as the 911 call went out to the surrounding area’s police officers.

Among the lifted items, per a post on the Gwinnett County Police Twitter feed, were electric toothbrushes and gaming systems, alongside a whack of weed, guns (no roses), a beat-up Gibson Les Paul, and bullets. Oh, how I wish I was there when they got—charged!

This isn’t the first time Tesla tech has thwarted thieves’ escape attempts. An Arizona woman reportedly stole a Tesla in 2019, but it ran out of battery during her escape. And in 2020, a 21-year-old man attempted to carjack someone’s Model 3—before the owner played the reverse-Uno card by remotely locking the thief in the vehicle.
