Allen Iverson is a Hall of Famer and is widely considered one of the best NBA players of his era. He’s gone head-to-head with some of the greatest players the league has ever seen, and more often than not he was able to hold his own.
Iverson battled players like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Michael Jordan for years and those experiences shaped the player he became, ultimately helping him reach the level of a Hall of Fame player.
Iverson recently named his all-time starting five, and it’s hard to argue with the players he chose.
“Steph Curry, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal,” Iverson said when asked which five players he would pick.
It’s an interesting list for a number of reasons, but it’s one of the rare all-time starting fives that could actually work on-court.
Each player could play their actual position and the spacing would allow for each player to highlight their strengths.
Iverson also chose players he played with during his career, with his final season coming in Curry’s rookie season.
Many former players will choose players from eras they didn’t participate in, which adds a bit of legitimacy to Iverson’s list.
Unlike a lot of older players, Iverson has been supportive of the new generation of players in the NBA.
It’s likely that he could give an entirely different starting five in a few years, but that’s a testament to how much the NBA can grow in a short period of time.
