‘Amazing’ item removes ‘thick’ toilet limescale in just ‘2 hours’

Toilet limescale can make the cleanest bathrooms look grubby and unpleasant. Limescale in loos can appear as brown, orange or pink stains. The limescale is caused by a buildup of calcium carbonate which appears when hard water evaporates. This will be particularly bad in hard water areas which have a high mineral content.

What can I do to get it clean? It looks like really thick limescale. I’ve tried bleach, toilet cleaner and tried scraping but it’s so hard. Sorry for the gross picture.”

The picture depicted a toilet bowl covered in orangey, brown grime up to the water line.

The post was inundated with more than 640 comments from fellow cleaning enthusiasts.

The most suggested response was to use Black Harpic liquid toilet cleaner or tablets.

Liz Carreira said: “Harpic Black is the only thing that worked when we moved into our rental.” Gem Gem commented: “Harpic Black works wonders.”

Susan Mason replied: “Black Harpic left overnight a few times.” Ashly Watson wrote: “Empty the loo water out.

“Line the toilet bowl and stained area with loo roll and soak the area with Black Harpic for two hours.”

Stacey Louise Brake posted: “Black Harpic tablets and Black Harpic liquid. Tablets overnight and liquid after every use.

“Leave them to soak until you need to use them again then clean and scrub with a brush before using. Then repeat the process.”

Chloe Womack said: “Harpic Black works amazingly. I put some down a toilet that was worse than this and left it overnight.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using caustic soda, spirit of salts, cola and white vinegar.

Marlene Hill said: “Buy caustic soda from a hardware store. Sprinkle it in the toilet and leave it overnight.

“Wear gloves all the time and use a loo brush to scrub off the limescale and dirt. It should come off easily. If there’s any left, do it again.

“Stand back whilst flushing after to make sure you don’t get splashed. I’ve used this method and it always works.”

Jean Barber commented: “Spirit of salts – pour down and leave overnight.”

Karen Paxton replied: “Pour a can or bottle of full-strength cola in.

“Leave for at least 20 minutes then give it a good brush and flush and repeat. Should fix the problem.”

Sand Kirton wrote: “Overnight soak in white vinegar? It’s better if you empty all the water from the bowl first and heat the vinegar. Next morning, scrub it with baking soda.”
