Rayudu, who recently retired from the IPL, was on the line to become the first Indian international to play in MLC. He was slated to play alongside the likes of Devon Conway, Mitchell Santner, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and David Miller for Texas Super Kings.
Texas Super Kings are owned by the owners of five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They will kick off their campaign in the tournament-opener against Los Angeles Knight Riders at the Grand Prairie in Texas on Friday, July 14.
Rayudu’s withdrawal comes right after reports emerged that the BCCI are planning to come up with a policy to regulate the participation of retired Indian cricketers (international and IPL) in overseas leagues. Reportedly, BCCI is irked by the spike in Indian players playing foreign leagues.
“We will be coming out with a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirements,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told reporters on Friday. “Once the policy is decided in a month or so, we will send it back to the Apex Council for approval,” he added.
Rayudu made his India debut in 2013 and went on to play 55 ODIs and 6 T20Is. The former Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh cricketer scored 1694 runs, including 3 hundreds at an average of 47.05 in the ODIs. Once touted to become the next big thing in Indian cricket, he last represented the Men in Blue in 2019.
