The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s appearance comes just a few months after he won a legal battle against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who had accused him of physical abuse. Depp denied her allegations and maintained she was the abuser during their five-year relationship.
Heard supporters were quick to criticize MTV for including the actor in “ceremonies that aren’t even in his line of work.”
The actress’ sister also hit out at Depp’s inclusion in the awards show.
“@MTV you’re disgusting and clearly desperate!” Henriquez shared in her Instagram Story. “I really hope that none of the people that made this call have daughters…”
Henriquez also included the message “I stand with Amber Heard” and renamed the event the “DVMAs” — an apparent reference to domestic violence — in her post.

But most of the reaction on social media was pro-Depp, with one fan praising him for “mocking being cancelled.”
Another post, with the hashtag #JohnnyDeppKeepsWinning, listed off the three-time Oscar nominees recent achievements, including the boffo sales of his debut art collection and news that he has inked a seven-figure deal with Dior to continue on as the face of their Sauvage men’s cologne. Heard, the poster continued, remains “unemployed.”
Depp, 59, sued Heard, 36, for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed in which she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse. The Edward Scissorhands star claimed the article ruined his career and maintained she was the abuser in their relationship.
In June, a seven-person jury mostly sided with him, awarding the actor $10.35 million in damages. Heard counter-sued Depp, who was found guilty on one count of defamation through his former lawyer Adam Waldman.

After the verdict, Depp said in a statement that the jury “gave me my life back.” Heard, meanwhile, said the judgement was a “setback” for other survivors of domestic violence.
Heard has announced she will appeal the jury’s decision and has hired a new legal team to help her mount a her defence.
“When it comes to protecting the fundamental right of Freedom of Speech, we look at the jury’s decision — to paraphrase a famous quote — not ‘as the beginning of the end, but merely the end of the beginning.’ A different court warrants different representation, particularly as so much new evidence is now coming to light,” a spokesperson for Heard said in a statement to the Toronto Sun.
Since his court victory, Depp has hit the stage with musician Jeff Beck and is set to direct Modigliani, a biographical drama about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
After not having acted in a film since 2019, Depp is also is set to play King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry.
