An Amtrak train derailed Wednesday in Moorpark after ramming into a truck, causing “severe damage,” according to fire officials.
The crash occurred near Los Angeles Avenue and Gabbert Road in Moorpark in Ventura County and sparked a fire in the train’s baggage car, according to fire radio calls.
Authorities did not provide an exact time of the derailment.
A spokesperson with the Ventura County Fire Department said the seven-car train had derailed. It struck a truck before derailing, according to fire radio calls. The Fire Department sent fire engines, medics and EMS personnel to the scene.
There was at least “one injured crew member and severe damage to the train,” a woman said over the fire radio. The driver of the truck was able to exit his vehicle and seemed to be OK, emergency responders said over the radio.
Some of the train cars were leaning at awkward angles against a hillside, video of the incident showed. A mangled part of the truck rested on the tracks where the train came to a stop.
Most passengers were exiting the train cars, according to emergency responders on the fire radio.
Amtrak did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
