An MCU series cursed by nothing but bad buzz tries to save itself by swiping a TikTok star

Honestly, most of the MCU series on their way to Disney Plus over the next 12 months are suffering from at least a smidge of bad fortune, from the shadow of Jonathan Majors’ allegation troubles hanging over Loki season two to former cast-members hitting back at Daredevil: Born Again. But it’s fair to say that Echo may be suffering from the worst luck of them all.

The Hawkeye spinoff, which will bring back Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, has been plagued by behind-the-scenes troubles, the full extent of which will only become clear in time, but that we suspect has caused it to lose an episode from its length and may have something to do with the fact it’s being dumped on Disney Plus in one go — a first for Marvel Studios — this Nov. 29.

With the hype for it unfortunately rather low, then, it appears Echo may be trying to increase its street cred by recruiting a bonafide TikTok star to its cast. Stunt performer Steven Shelby lists Echo on his online resume, which unveils that he’s on board as the stunt double for Juwan Lakota. Thanks to this, we can seemingly confirm that Lakota has joined the show’s cast himself.

While Lakota only has a single screen credit to his name on IMDb (the short film Cowboy Currency), he is a much more familiar face on the TikTok app, thanks to his 430,000 followers and 4.1 million likes across his videos.

As we’ve found with series like Wednesday, whose enormous success can in part be rooted back to the Wednesday Addams dance craze it spawned, TikTok can have a huge impact on whether a TV show becomes a smash or a wash-out. So, with any luck, Lakota’s hiring might sprinkle a bit of much-needed social media magic on Echo.
