Sex and the City fans are getting another dose of Carrie and crew (and a few fun surprises!) as the classic series’ sequel And Just Like That... this week returns for a second season.
The return of such a cherished series is sure to inspire viewing parties at homes and bars across the nation, and that’s going to mean a whole lot of Cosmopolitans — the signature drink of any true Sex and the City fan. But as this series is a bit of a departure from the original, shouldn’t this generation of cocktails be as well?
To that end, there’s some pretty exciting variations on the Cosmopolitan to try out just in time for this week’s viewing festivities!
The New Flame
The classic version of this cocktail with Citron vodka, cranberry juice, Cointreau, and lime is a classic for a reason. Gab’s in New York City ups the ante on the classic with a fire-y twist. It’s a classic cosmo with a lemon twist that is lit on fire giving the lemon an extra pop. Cause she’s hot right now! “We added this cosmo in honor of the current season of ‘and just like that…’ We also wanted to pay homage to Sarah Jessica Parker as she showed us so much love this week,” said owner Gabby Madden.
Here Comes The Hot Steppa
A fun twist on the classic cocktail can be found at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Arizona. Here Comes The Hot Steppa is made with Titos Vodka, raspberry, prickly pear, mango, and lime habanero. “This cocktail is a spin on the classic cosmo that even Carrie Bradshaw would approve of. Since it does get warm here in Arizona, we really wanted to make something that is both refreshing and smart with a nod to a bar classic. The addition of prickly pear that we grow on property makes it authentically Arizonan. This one’s a winner,” said Karma Tsepal, Asst. Director of F&B.
Mrs. Jones
This takes the classic cosmo experience and gives it a bit of pizzazz – similar to its namesake! Available on the summer menu at The Richardson in New York City, the Mrs. Jones is a spin on the cosmo with added flavors of kumquat, hibiscus, curaçao and orange bitters. “This cocktail was inspired by the recent trend in everything from the 90’s. But don’t be fooled, this cocktail is not a Cosmopolitan… But it may have been inspired by one,” said Joel Lee Kulp, Owner and Manager of The Richardson. “The Cosmopolitan is, if we’re being frank, rather a bore of a cocktail (It’s 2023, after all). In creating the Mrs Jones cocktail, we did not stray far from the original intent of the Cosmo – giving flavor to vodka while making curious onlookers say, ‘What’s that?!’ By adding the nuance of kumquat & hibiscus (and, obviously, a touch of bitter), the drink is more subtle, more mature and more Samantha than Carrie.”
Sex and the City
“About a year ago, a group of four women came in and ordered Cosmopolitans. Not only did it remind me of Sex and the City from back in the day —I actually recommended our signature cocktail, the A.C.K., as it is very popular among the ladies, but they told me that they were heading to Bryant Park in hopes of catching the filming of And Just Like That — and they really wanted Cosmos! I asked them to trust me and instead of either, I made a blend of the two cocktails and “just like that”, the “Sex and the City” was created. Vodka, St. Germain, Cointreau, sparkling wine, cranberry and lime juice encompass this elegant cocktail garnished with a strawberry rose and lime twist. And they loved it!!” said Nikolay Gergov, Partner, Pando Park and Pando 39.
Sex-Sea Cosmo
At YOT Bar & Kitchen in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this cocktail is made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, butterfly pea flower, orange liqueur, lemon juice, topped with an edible orchid. “The Sex-Sea Cosmo is a vibrant take on the classic cocktail that immediately gives you the feeling of sipping in New York with a South Florida twist,” says Natalie Samario, Beverage Director at SFL Hospitality Group. “The Sex-Sea Cosmo is made using Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Butterfly Pea Flower, orange liqueur, lemon juice and is topped with an edible orchid providing a tangy and sweet yet refreshing taste that will leave you wanting more. It’s a drink that exudes confidence and charisma, making you feel like Carrie Bradshaw, but on vacation.”
Orange Blossom Cosmopolitan
Jason Hedges, author of The Seasonal Cocktail and Beverage Director at Laurent Tourondel Hospitality: L’Amico, Skirt Steak, SECOND, and The Vine, created a cocktail at The Vine in New York, New York that any SATC fan is sure to appreciate. “I’ve always loved the way orange blossom and cranberry taste together. So here is my riff on the Cosmo — a modern classic that is often considered the catalyst for our current cocktail renaissance – and feminist icon – that was propelled to TV fame by Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda.”
The Flâneur
Found at Coterie in Charleston, this cocktail is made with vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, Créme de Mûre, and is garnished with a grapefruit twist. “A Flâneur is an idle stroller about town. It is an ambivalent figure of urban affluence and modernity, representing the ability to wander detached from society with no other purpose than to be an acute observer of industrialized, contemporary life. In this cosmopolitan variation there is the addition of floral notes from elderflower liqueur. The cranberry tartness and bitterness is replaced with a combination of grapefruit juice and a small amount of créme de mûre (blackberry). The resulting look is similar to the original cosmopolitan but with a flavor a little more nuanced and complex while remaining the refreshing quality,” said owner Jeremy Buck.
Swinging Sultan
At Halifax in Hoboken, New Jersey (at the W Hotel), The Swinging Sultan is Halifax’s take on the Cosmopolitan, made with Ketel One Botanical Peach & Orange Blossom vodka, Sambuca, fresh pomegranate and lime juices, and garnished with a sprig of rosemary. Beverage Director/General Manager Weng Lee says: “The Swinging Sultan is our take on the classic Cosmopolitan. I was looking for a cocktail that is more savory and herbaceous rather than fruity and lemony. To do this, I substituted a classic Cosmopolitan’s orange liqueur for Sambuca and the cranberry juice for pomegranate juice.”
The Rosépolitan
At The Hampton Social, they made the cosmopolitan their own with the signature Rosépolitan. “This rosé was inspired by recreating a cocktail classic but adding a refreshing summer twist with a tasty splash of rosé,” said beverage director Greg Innocent.
Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan
At Sugar Factory American Brasserie, a blend of cotton candy vodka and the flavors of a classic Cosmopolitan like orange, lime and cranberry that is then topped off with a puff of cotton candy and garnished with a pop rock rim. “At Sugar Factory, we offer tons of fun, colorful drinks and know that our Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan would be Carrie Bradshaw-approved! This fan-favorite is Instagrammable and turns a childhood memory into an adult treat,” said Charissa Davidovici, founder of Sugar Factory American Brasserie.
Rose Martini
At Brasserie Mon Chou Chou in San Antonio, the Rose Martini features Belvedere vodka, Lillet Rose, St Germain, and peach bitters. “Carrie Bradshaw’s love for Cosmopolitans was immortalized in this Sex and the City quote: ‘Hi, I’d like a cheeseburger, please, a large fries, and a Cosmopolitan.’ At Brasserie Mon Chou Chou, we couldn’t agree more. Even our Rose Martini (with Belvedere vodka, Lillet Rose, St. Germain, and peach bitters) sounds like a drink tailor-made for Carrie,” said Jérôme Sérot, co-founder Southerleigh Hospitality Group (parent company of Brasserie Mon Chou Chou).
Carrie Me
Box St. All Day in San Antonio makes this cocktail with lemon, Campari, Luxardo Maraschino and Cointreau. “Carrie Me is our newest off-menu cocktail. This twist on a cosmo will make you wish you never called him. Campari mixed with Luxardo Maraschino, Cointreau and lemon juice will have you sleeping in your shoe closet until Aiden’s Return,” said Caroline Garcia-Bowman, owner.
Frozen Cosmopolitan
Found at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, this hotel’s spin on a classic Cosmopolitan is a frozen blend of cranberry and lime with vodka. “We are excited for guests to indulge in this vibrant and refreshing Cosmopolitan experience with a frozen twist inspired by the magic of a California summer,” said Sunny Saha, Director of Food & Beverage.
The Salty Chick
Found at The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, this cocktail is served in a chilled martini glass with a salted rim and made with vodka, Aperol, ruby grapefruit juice and lime juice, and garnished with a choice of a lime or orange. “This drink is everything you want on a hot summer day – not so sweet, salty and slightly tart,” said Frances Leary, beverage curator at The Galt House Hotel. “A fun summer twist on the classic cosmopolitan, The Salty Chick is best enjoyed in the sun with a cool pair of shades.”
Tom’s Cosmopolitan
Found at Geppetto in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this cocktail is made with Flaghill cranberry liqueur, Grey Goose Citron, and Combier Orange. “Giving it a uniquely New England flavor and twist, Tom’s Cosmopolitan at Geppetto is made with Flag Hill Cranberry liqueur, from the oldest distillery in New Hampshire — it’s a real delight and perfect summertime sipper! said Jared Sadoian, Director of Operations of Cambridge Street Hospitality Group.
