Root stands by decision to bat first despite crushing defeat

James Anderson has revealed he and fellow England opener Stuart Broad have discussed their post-Ashes plans amid England’s nightmare down under.

England have been completely blown away by their Australian rivals on away soil, as the Aussies head into the fourth test this week having already retained the urn after winning the opening three matches.

The visitors have been slammed for their showings this winter, however one shining light for Joe Root’s team has of course been the ever-reliable Anderson.

And despite all the problems the Lancashire seamer did have some good news for English cricket fans, admitting he and his notorious opening partner Broad have no plans of retirement following the series.

Discussing his feeling ahead of the fourth test in Sydney England’s all-time leading wicket taker wrote in The Telegraph: “Unfortunately, I have been on a few tours that have not ended well in Australia.

“There is always an air of uncertainty when you lose convincingly so who knows what the future will hold.

“It is natural you start thinking about what happens next but the message from the chats I’ve had with the captain and senior players around me is to keep going.

“Personally, even in these challenging times, I feel in a really good place with my bowling, and have done for a while.

“I will have to wait and see but I have no intention of finishing.”

Anderson also admitted that from having a conversation with Broad, he also has no plans to call it a day on his Test career anytime soon.

He continued: “From speaking to Stuart Broad, it is clear he definitely has not had enough yet either. He is very much keen to carry on as well.

“He has had a great couple of years which is what frustrates him the most. He got injured in the summer which meant that he had not played much cricket coming into this tour.”

Broad has surprisingly played somewhat of a backseat role this winter, after being left out of both the first and third Test matches of the series.

And whilst the veteran bowler was less than impressed with being left out, Anderson admitted Broad has played a hugely important role in the dressing room.

“He is a competitor which is why he is narked about being left out in Brisbane where it was green and in Melbourne where there was a lot of grass on the pitch,” Anderson added.

“He has been down but the way he has carried himself around the group has been brilliant.

“He has a huge amount of experience, he has just cracked on with helping out as much as possible whether it be as 12th man or offering advice to players in the game.

“I have seen him working on his bowling during games and between Tests. He is working as hard as I have ever seen.

“He is not whinging about anything, just getting his head down and carrying on. He loves proving people wrong so if he plays in Sydney I’m sure he will put in a performance.”
