Liverpool star Andy Robertson expects a ‘tough’ Champions League last-16 clash with Inter Milan, but is relishing the opportunity to realise a dream by playing at the San Siro.
The Merseyside outfit have a 100 per cent record in Europe’s premier competition this season and progressed through to the knockout phase as Group B winners, beating Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan both home and away.
Red Bull Salzburg were initially plucked from the hat as Liverpool’s opponents for the round of 16, but a ‘technical error’ meant the draw had to be scrapped and redone at Monday’s chaotic ceremony in Nyon, Switzerland.
Liverpool – six-time European champions in their history – later discovered they will do battle with Serie A giants Inter for a place in this year’s quarter-finals.
Jurgen Klopp’s men return to the San Siro for their first leg against Inter on February 16 after beating AC Milan at the same stadium just last week, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi securing a 2-1 victory.
After being left as an unused substitute versus the Rossoneri in the group stage, Robertson is hoping he is finally able to take to the field at one of football’s most iconic grounds.
Champions League last-16 draw
Salzburg v Bayern Munich
Sporting v Manchester City
Benfica v Ajax
Chelsea v Lille
Atletico Madrid v Manchester United
Villarreal v Juventus
Inter Milan v Liverpool
PSG v Real Madrid
‘The draw has been made now and it’s an exciting one,’ Robertson told The Mirror.
‘I was on the bench last week [against AC Milan] which at least meant that I could go, but the San Siro is a stadium that I’ve wanted to play in since I became professional.
‘It’s iconic, an amazing stadium.
‘After visiting last week I enjoyed being able to be there and take it in, but hopefully come February then I can be on the pitch and enjoy it even more.’
Liverpool were made to work for their three points by AC Milan in Group B and Robertson is anticipating a similar contest versus Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan, who currently sit top of Serie A.
‘The two Milan teams are fighting it out at the top of the league, and they’re both neck-and-neck,’ Robertson added.
‘We’ve had that experience of playing against AC in the group stages, and they were a really tough opponent.
‘The home leg I played in was a really hard game. They played really well and made us work for the three points.
‘We’re expecting the same, if not more, from Inter, and obviously because it’s the last-16 then everything is heightened.’
The Scotland left-back went on: ‘It’s going to be a tough draw, we’ll look forward to it.
‘But we can’t think too much about it because i think there’s about 40 games between now and then!’
Klopp had never managed at the San Siro before Liverpool’s recent victory over AC Milan and the German is looking forward to returning in two months’ time.
‘I had to wait 54 years to play at the San Siro for the first time… and now it’ll be twice in three months, so that’s good news!’ he told Liverpool’s official website.
‘Of course, it is a tough draw, definitely. They are the league leaders in Italy; a good team in a good moment.
‘We will see how things go until we meet in February.’
