Another Look: GlobalWafers CEO Doris Hsu Wins EY World Entrepreneur Award

Doris Hsu, CEO of Taiwan silicon wafer supplier GlobalWafers and a member of Forbes Asia’s Power Businesswoman List in 2022, was named the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year for 2023 at an award ceremony held in Monaco, EY said today.

GlobalWafers announced last year would invest up to $5 billion in a new wafer plant in Texas that would create as many as 1,500 jobs. I interviewed Hsu in November about the Texas project (here) and in January about the possibility of GlobalWafers’ parent Sino-American Silicon Products investing in solar module production in the U.S. (here).

Hsu, who was also a member of Forbes Asia’s 50 Over 50 list published in January, was selected from among nearly 5,000 program participants that included the 49 winners across 45 countries and jurisdictions competing for the global title, EY said. She is the third woman to hold the title and the first winner from Taiwan in the award’s 23-year history, it noted.

“Doris is a visionary business leader with an unwavering passion for innovation and commitment to sustainability,” EY said. The EY World Entrepreneur of the Year was chosen by an independent panel of judges based on four criteria: entrepreneurial spirit, purpose, growth and impact.

GlobalWafers has plants in Taiwan, the U.S., mainland China, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Denmark and Italy; it competes against the likes of Shin-Etsu, Sumco and Siltronic, and boasts a customer list that includes IBM, Sharp and Panasonic.
