Another Porsche supercar claims title of BaT’s most expensive sale

“A low-mile 2005 Porsche Carrera GT supercar has recently taken the title of the most expensive car sold on popular online auction site Bring a Trailer (BaT).” We ran that exact lead on a story earlier this month, and now we’re running it again, because less than two weeks after that car’s record sale, an even-lower-mile example did the exact same thing.

The 1,255-km (780-mile) red Carrera GT that set a new benchmark January 5 crossed the site’s digital auction block for US$1.9 million; on January 18, a 402-km (250-mile) silver Carrera GT was virtually hammered for US$2.0 million.

The new record-price car apparently gleaned its edge from its having just a third of the red CGT’s miles on the odometer, though some BaT commenters were surprised a car in a more readily available colour combination – GT Silver Metallic over Terracotta leather was in fact the Carrera GT’s launch scheme, and the most popular one ordered on the 1,270 cars built – managed to top its twin.

The CGT’s documentation included its original window sticker, which revealed it sold for US$448,300 when new in 2005.

The Porsche supercar was offered at no reserve FinestVehiclesTraded of Illinois, and its new owner, registered on the site as MNokaoi , wrote only “Thank You BaT. My first auction of any kind. It is a new day!”

Bring a Trailer last year saw US$829 million in cars trade hands on its pages, outpacing its legacy rivals by a quarter-billion dollars. The online-only enthusiast auction site has become only more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, with an incalculable impact on the collector car market.
