Antiques Roadshow guest issues warning after eye-watering valuation of brooch

Antiques Roadshow expert Joanna Hardy left one guest blown away after she gave a staggering valuation of her brooch, which had been passed down through generations.

After the valuation, the guest issued a warning to her daughter, telling her “Look after it” after Joanna said it was worth between £25,000 and £30,000.

As the expert inspected the item, she began: “This is a very special jewel and I wasn’t disappointed when I opened the box to see this. But also it’s a very special occasion I hear.”

The guest’s daughter replied: “So this brooch was given to my mum by my granny when I was born and mum passed it on to me when my daughter was born.”

Joanna continued: “And to think that this brooch has been passed down through these generations, that is what jewellery is all about.”

She went on: “I love it because it is everything that I look for in a jewel, it is beautifully crafted.

“Everything you see has been hand-done and handmade.”

As Joanna picked up the brooch, she shared: “And you’ve got all these yellow diamonds, and then the head is all white diamonds, then that emerald eye.

“And what I love to see, you might not see the other eye but they have always paid attention to the reverse and you’ve got it sitting perched on a line of baguette diamonds and then you’ve got these three Marquise cut sapphires.”

Turning her attention to the valuation, Joanna shared: “I mean, it really is absolutely superb.

“And if you were going to buy something similar, you would probably need to spend about £25,000 and £30,000.”

The guest put her hand to her mouth in shock before exclaiming: “No!”

She laughed with her daughter before warning her: “Look after it.”

The guest later added: “I am delighted that it is so valuable because it is such a special thing to hand down.”

Another item that struck a chord with the experts in the episode was a valuable oil painting that was bought from a charity shop for £20.

A ring crafted from a swan’s feather which survived for over 300 years was also given an eye-watering valuation.
