Apple’s new iPad has a weird Apple Pencil problem

iPad 2022 only works with Apple Pencil (1st generation)

The new iPad looks to be a good upgrade for iPad 9th Gen and 8th Gen owners. You’re getting an all-screen display, an A14 Bionic chip, upgraded cameras, and a USB-C port. These are all nice things to have. But if you are an iPad user with the first-generation Apple Pencil, Apple has made things rather complicated with the new iPad 2022.

The new entry-level iPad only works with Apple Pencil (1st generation). The problem here is that the iPad now comes with a USB-C port while the original Apple Pencil charges over a Lightning connector. Weird, right?

Why did Apple launch an entry-level iPad with USB-C and not give support for the second-generation Apple Pencil? After all, the iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad Pro all support the Apple Pencil (2nd generation). We don’t have an answer for this but Apple has offered a solution for the iPad-Apple Pencil problem.

Buy Apple’s Rs 900 USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter, says Apple. The adapter will allow you to charge your first-generation Apple Pencil with the new iPad 10th generation. According to the product description, “the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is required to pair and charge Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (10th generation). Your Apple Pencil plugs into one end of the adapter and the USB-C Charge Cable from your iPad plugs into the other.”

The last line in Apple’s description is worth pointing out. The adapter still doesn’t make it quite as easy to charge the Apple Pencil with the iPad. You won’t be able to stick one end of the adapter directly into the iPad’s USB-C connector. A USB-C cable is required where one end is connected to the iPad and the other end to the adapter. This is the only way to charge the Apple Pencil using the iPad. A simpler method would be to charge the Apple stylus directly with the iPhone. But you would need an iPhone for that. Basically, Apple is not making life easy for Apple Pencil users looking to buy the new entry-level iPad.
